Maruti Suzuki launched the Jimny SUV in India at INR 1.274 million for the entry-level Zeta trim. The top-spec Alpha trim was launched at INR 1.505 million.
The SUV features ladder-frame construction, triple-link rigid axle suspension, and an electronic traction control system. It offers an appreciable ground clearance of 210mm.
At 3,985mm in length and with a wheelbase of 2,590mm, the Jimny five-door’s wheelbase is 340mm longer than its three-door sibling.
Signature Jimny design traits, like the upright pillars, flat surfaces, circular-shaped headlamps, slatted grille, chunky off-road tyres, flared wheel arches, and tailgate-mounted spare tyre, have been carried over to the five-door model.
The safety kit includes standard features like six airbags, ESP, and hill-hold assist.
The range-topping Alpha trim includes features like automatic LED headlamps, cruise control, keyless entry/exit, a 9.0-inch SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment system, automatic climate control, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
The Jimny’s powertrain gets one engine option. It is powered by a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that develops 105HP and 134Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual or a four-speed torque converter automatic.
Despite Maruti’s model line-up using the newer K15C engine, the Jimny uses the older K15B engine. While the manual variants of the Jimny claim a fuel efficiency of 16.94km/l, the automatic variants are rated at 16.39km/l.
Being a proper off-roader, it gets Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro 4WD system with a manual transfer case and low-range gearbox with “2WD-high”, “4WD-high” and “4WD-low” modes.
India is the first country to get the five-door version of the Jimny. It is manufactured at Maruti Suzuki‘s Gurugram plant in Haryana for local sales and international export. However, despite being a five-door model, it is, at best, a four-seater.
