Ferrari has introduced the 296 Challenge, set to premiere at the Mugello Circuit during the 2024 season of the Ferrari Challenge as part of the Finali Mondiali.
The Ferrari 296 Challenge marks a significant milestone in the single-make series as the inaugural car to feature a V6 engine, diverging from the tradition of using V8 engines in all prior models within the series.
The most notable departure from the 296 GTB, aligned with the evolution of the 296 GT3, involves the elimination of the hybrid powertrain to shed weight, while concurrently boosting power output to 700 cv, achieving a segment-leading specific power output of 234 cv/l.
When it comes to aerodynamics, the Challenge car incorporates innovations from the 296 GT3 that have been pushed to new limits, resulting in remarkable downforce figures.
The braking system underwent a comprehensive overhaul, featuring the inaugural implementation of cutting-edge CCM-R PLUS discs, leveraging technology inspired by the most demanding track applications."
The Ferrari 296 Challenge can generate 870 kg of downforce at 250 km/h with the spoiler at its maximum angle of attack. This is an 18% increase in downforce compared to the 488 Challenge Evo.
The focal point is the S-Duct in the central region, linking the underbody and upper body to optimize the central diffuser's efficiency and noticeably diminish the 296 Challenge's susceptibility to pitch-related changes in aero balance.
For tracks with noise level restrictions, Ferrari has developed a specific silencer that can easily be fitted to the basic exhaust line by removing the two tail pipes.
The LTE antenna provides a Marshalling function (communications from the race marshals sent directly to the instrument panel) and will be compulsory for cars competing in the Challenge championship. Further functions may be added successively.
Most of downforce over the front axle is generated by the splitters and the front section of the underbody, while the rear aero is dominated by the adjustable-angle fixed wing.
