Claimed to be the most advanced version of the muscle car to date, the GTD is a limited-edition, road-legal performance machine derived from the Mustang GT3 race car.
The GTD moniker is borrowed from the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) ‘GTD’ racing class, where the Mustang GT3 competes in the United States.
From the fenders, bonnet, and the cover that replaces the boot lid to the door sills, front splitter, rear diffuser and roof, most of the body panels are all carbon fibre.
It is propelled by a 5.2-litre supercharged V8. The engine comes with dual air inlets and the first dry-sump engine oil system ever fitted to a road-going Mustang.
With a claimed engine redline of over 7,500rpm, Ford is targeting an 800+ horsepower output for the GTD, which will make it the most powerful road-legal Mustang ever made.
The car drives on 20-inch forged magnesium wheels, shod with 325mm wide tyres at the front and 345mm rear ones.
In place of the boot rests a semi-active suspension setup that can vary spring rates and ride height. In Track Mode, the ride height can be set to nearly 40mm lower than in standard configuration.
Aerodynamic aids come in the form of a front splitter, vented hood & fenders, and hydraulically-controlled active rear wing.
