Waymo self-driving vehicle set ablaze in San Francisco

San Francisco witnessed a shocking act of vandalism on Saturday night as a crowd targeted and set fire to a Waymo self-driving vehicle in the city’s Chinatown district. The incident, characterised as the most destructive attack on driverless vehicles in the United States to date, has sparked concerns about public safety and the future of autonomous technology.

According to reports from both the Alphabet-owned company and eyewitnesses, the incident unfolded when a crowd surrounded a white sport utility vehicle, identified as a Waymo self-driving car, as it was navigating through the streets. Witnesses described individuals celebrating China’s Lunar New Year by setting off fireworks, with one person jumping onto the vehicle’s hood and breaking its windshield. Within moments, chaos ensued as others joined in, vandalising the car with skateboards, graffiti, and further damage.

Videos shared by witness Michael Vandi captured the vehicle engulfed in flames, emitting a plume of black smoke, signalling the severity of the attack. Waymo confirmed that the fire was ignited by a firework thrown inside the vehicle, leading to its destruction. Fortunately, no riders were inside the vehicle at the time, and there have been no reported injuries.

Authorities, including the San Francisco Police Department and the Fire Department, are actively investigating the incident to determine the cause and apprehend those responsible. The Waymo vehicle, a Jaguar I-PACE equipped with advanced cameras and sensors, fell victim to an unprecedented act of aggression, highlighting the vulnerability of autonomous vehicles to malicious attacks.

While Waymo emphasised that this was an isolated event, concerns have been raised about the escalating hostility towards self-driving technology. Previous incidents in San Francisco and Phoenix, Arizona, have seen groups disrupting the operations of autonomous vehicles, obstructing sensors, and attempting to block their paths. Such acts of interference reflect growing public apprehension following safety incidents involving autonomous vehicles, including a pedestrian-dragging accident involving a General Motors’ Cruise unit vehicle last year.

The severity of the attack underscores the challenges faced by companies like Waymo as they strive to advance autonomous technology. Despite setbacks, Waymo remains committed to its mission of providing safe and reliable transportation solutions. The company currently offers driverless ride-hailing services in Phoenix and is actively working to expand its operations to Los Angeles and Austin, Texas.

However, incidents like these raise pertinent questions about the readiness of society to embrace autonomous vehicles fully. With the rise of driverless technology, ensuring public trust and safety becomes paramount. As investigations into the San Francisco incident continue, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing public concerns and fostering a supportive environment for the integration of autonomous vehicles into everyday life.
