After the global debut of new-age electric-only models like the EX90, EX30 and EM90, Volvo has decided to rename the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge models to EX40 and EC40 and drop the Recharge suffix. This move has been announced to streamline the product portfolio and improve transparency for its customers. However, the non-electric XC40 remains to be called as XC40 and continues with its petrol engine options.
In addition to the nomenclature update, Volvo has also rolled out an optional software update for the existing and new owners of the new-renamed EX40 and EC40 crossovers. The new software update is called the performance software pack and it offers an additional 34PS of power, thus boosting the power output of both crossovers to 442PS. It is worth mentioning that the new software package is optional for Twin Motor variants of both crossovers and owners can shop this update via the mobile app.
Moving aside from the electric models, Volvo has also brought small updates to its plug-in- and mild-hybrid range of models. Firstly, the plug-in-hybrid models no longer carry the Recharge suffix and are denoted by the T6 or T8 badging, signifying the performance output of respective models. Furthermore, the mild-hybrid variants of the new XC60 and XC90 now employ a more efficient engine combustion cycle, which is expected to result in CO2 emission reductions and fuel economy improvements of up to around 4 per cent for the XC60 and around 2 per cent for the XC90 based on the WLTP cycle.
Lastly, the update also includes the introduction of a special Black Edition for the EX40 and EC40 models, as a continuation of the success of the XC60 Black Edition. The new Black Edition includes Onyx Black paint, high gloss black badging, 20-inch five-spoke alloys in high gloss black and the choice between microtech or textile charcoal interiors.
