In a significant step towards environmental sustainability, the Vatican has inked a groundbreaking deal with German automaker Volkswagen to replace its entire car fleet with electric vehicles by 2030. While financial specifics of the agreement were not disclosed by the governor’s office of the world’s smallest state, the statement emphasized the involvement of medium- and long-term leasing arrangements for Volkswagen and Skoda electric cars.

Driving the path to carbon neutrality

The collaborative initiative, termed a “partnership accord” with the Volkswagen Group, aligns with the Vatican’s overarching objective of achieving carbon neutrality and transitioning to exclusive reliance on renewable energy. Covering 108 acres, the sovereign city-state aims to leverage such partnerships as a pivotal strategy to fulfil its long-term environmental aspirations.

Current fleet and diverse vehicle functions

The Vatican’s existing fleet comprises numerous vehicles, predominantly dark blue, serving diverse functions. From transporting senior Vatican officials to managing maintenance, gardening, and delivery tasks, the fleet plays a crucial role. Additionally, many lower-ranking Vatican officials and employees utilize their personal vehicles for commuting into the city-state from Rome.

Charging infrastructure and employee incentives

As part of the agreement, the Vatican intends to establish a comprehensive network of electric charging stations within its confines and Rome-based properties. This infrastructure will not only cater to the Vatican’s fleet but will also be accessible to employees for charging their private electric vehicles, presenting a tangible incentive to shift away from traditional fossil fuels.

The Pope’s eco-friendly transport

While Pope Francis currently travels within the Vatican and around Rome in a Ford Focus or a Fiat 500—both simplistic models—he avoids the large, gas-guzzling bulletproof limousines favoured by his predecessors. The statement did not clarify whether the deal with Volkswagen would eventually extend to cover the distinctive “popemobiles,” specially designed high vehicles used during public appearances in St. Peter’s Square. The current popemobile in use is a Mercedes.

Environmental advocacy by Pope Francis

Pope Francis, aged 86, has consistently championed environmental protection during his papacy. His commitment to a sustainable future is evident in his frequent calls for a shift away from fossil fuels. The collaboration with Volkswagen stands as a testament to the Vatican’s dedication to translating these ideals into concrete action, marking a significant stride towards a greener and eco-conscious future.
