The United Auto Workers (UAW) union officially endorsed U.S. President Joe Biden for his reelection bid, emphasising his pro-union stance and pointing to his historic support during a successful auto workers strike. UAW President Shawn Fain delivered a fervent speech in Washington, sharply criticising Republican former President Donald Trump, whom he accused of standing against the union’s values.
Fain praised Biden’s commitment to the union cause, particularly highlighting his decision to join a picket line during a significant auto workers strike for higher pay. The endorsement is expected to bolster Biden’s standing in manufacturing states like Michigan, where the autoworkers’ support holds significant sway.
During the endorsement, Fain lambasted Trump for his failure to persuade General Motors to keep an assembly plant open in Ohio and criticised Trump’s appearance at a non-union hall during a previous strike, labelling him a “scab.” Fain asserted, “Donald Trump stands against everything we stand for as a society.”
In response to the endorsement, President Biden expressed pride in standing with UAW members, commending Fain for his leadership during historic strikes. The President vowed to confront the outsourcing of manufacturing jobs to China and highlighted the Inflation Reduction Act, designed to incentivise U.S. manufacturing.
The Trump campaign, represented by spokesperson Steven Cheug, defended the former president, stating that Trump’s policies protected American jobs. Biden’s endorsements from major labour unions have been extensive, with the UAW providing a significant boost, especially considering Biden’s previous differences with Fain over electric vehicle (EV) policies.
While Biden narrowly won Michigan in 2020, the UAW’s endorsement is deemed crucial in securing votes in the upcoming election. Fain clarified that the decision to endorse Biden was unanimous among union board members, emphasising Biden’s tangible support during critical moments.
Despite the UAW’s endorsement, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters has not yet finalised its decision, planning a meeting with Trump next week. The Teamsters union backed Biden in 2020.
Fain also addressed concerns about Biden’s stance on the Israel-Gaza conflict, stating that the union has supported a ceasefire in Gaza and will continue to advocate for the issue. The UAW, having secured record-setting contracts last fall, views the endorsement as a strategic move to ensure the continuity of favourable policies and higher wages for its members.
