Toyota Motor has recalled over 135,000 Prius hybrid cars in Japan because of a problem that surfaced with the rear door handles of the vehicle.
According to a transport ministry filing, the batch of cars that have been recalled were manufactured between November 2022 and April 2024. It is important to note that the faulty rear doors did not warrant any reports of accidents.
While it was unclear if the Prius cars retailing outside Japan were also being recalled, a Toyota spokesperson stated that an assembly line that had been initially suspended due to quality checks for Prius cars will resume production of Corolla compact cars from Thursday onwards.
Tokai Rika Co, a Toyota supplier, said that the issue with the door switches for Prius is expected to cost the company a whopping 11 billion yen (USD 71 million) due to the product recall.
