To be showcased at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, the new Neo Steer steering wheel from Toyota reimages the yoke steering wheel design with integrated accelerator and brake pedals.
Yoke Steering Wheel Reimagined
The yoke-styled steering wheel broke headlines with the launch of the Tesla Model S Plaid. Later on, we saw a similar interpretation of the yoke steering in the Lexus RX electric crossover, adding steer-by-wire tech. Lexus’ sister company, Toyota has now broken a new segment of yoke steering wheel by incorporating the conventional foot-operated accelerator and brake pedals on the wheel itself, in the form of stubby levers.
While car enthusiasts may shun away from this rather radical idea, it will certainly alleviate the pain of drivers with lower limb impairments. Based on the images released by Toyota, the new yoke steering incorporates two new levers — one placed on the handgrip responsible for acceleration and one behind the handgrip responsible for braking. The concept seems to be inspired by motorcycles.
The unique concept will not only facilitate drivers with lower limb impairments but also enable an easier and “unrestricted” entry and exit. Toyota will showcase the new Neo Steer yoke steering wheel on the recently unveiled Land Cruiser LC250 at the Japan Mobility Show.
Alongside the new Neo Steer steering wheel, Toyota will also showcase a range of concepts and production vehicles such as the first-ever all-electric Land Cruiser SE concept, EPU electric pick-up truck concept, Land Hopper three-wheeled electric personal mobility concept and JUU electric wheelchair concept.
