Toyota 4Runner finally gets a makeover inside-out

Everything new!

The new Toyota 4Runner shares its TNGA-F global truck platform and a few of its design elements with the Tacoma pickup truck. Since the platform also underpins the flagship Land Cruiser model, it benefits from a high-strength bodyshell, steel ladder frame chassis, multi-link rear and double-wishbone front suspension.

The shared genes with Tacoma are also reflected in the way the new 4Runner looks. The rugged and practical design comes as courtesy of the Michigan-based CALTY design team who designed it alongside its pickup sibling. The new 4Runner continues with the roll-down rear window boosting convenient boot access. On the inside, the new 4Runner pack features such as a 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a digital key.

New and more efficient engines

The new 4Runner shares its petrol and hybrid powertrains with the Tacoma pickup truck. It offers two new efficient engine options — a 2.4L turbocharged petrol and a 2.4L hybrid. The former unit produces 281PS of power and 430Nm of torque whereas the latter offers 330PS of power and 630Nm of torque. The hybrid powertrain makes use of a 48PS electric motor that draws power from a 1.87kWh battery pack. Both the engine options come mated to an 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission, which replaces the ageing 5-speed auto of the outgoing 4Runner.

More capable than before

With the new generation, Toyota has further enhanced the offroad prowess of the new 4Runner. One of its biggest highlights is the new stabiliser bar disconnect mechanism that temporarily disconnects the anti-roll bars to increase wheel articulation. Toyota has also improved the approach and departure angles of the new 4Runner that stand at 32 degrees and 24 degree, respectively.

Toyota will offer the new 4Runner in three drivetrain options — 2WD, part-time and full-time four-wheel-drive. The 2WD variants come equipped with a limited-slip differential (LSD) while the four-wheel-drive options also add an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case and active traction control.
