Tesla (TSLA.O) has initiated legal proceedings against the Swedish Transport Agency, escalating the conflict arising from a worker’s strike that has obstructed the issuance of license plates for new vehicles, as reported by local business daily on Monday.

Labour dispute impacting license plates

IF Metall, Sweden’s prominent manufacturing union, is currently engaged in negotiations with Tesla for a collective bargaining agreement concerning mechanics in Sweden. The dispute has led Metall to declare a strike, beginning on October 27, with mechanics refusing to service Tesla vehicles. This labour action has resulted in a ripple effect, as members of other unions, including postal workers, dockworkers, and cleaners, have joined in solidarity. The cumulative impact has disrupted various operations for Tesla, notably the distribution of license plates for new vehicles.

Strategic move by IF Metall

The conflict revolves around IF Metall’s pursuit of a comprehensive collective bargaining agreement for mechanics associated with Tesla in Sweden. The strike initiated by Metall has not only restricted Tesla’s ability to service its vehicles in the country but has also garnered support from other unions, creating a broader challenge for the electric car manufacturer.

In response to the escalating dispute, Tesla has taken legal action against the Swedish Transport Agency. The lawsuit is a strategic move by the U.S. auto manufacturer to address the impasse caused by the ongoing strike, seeking resolution through legal channels.

Unresolved standoff

As of now, Tesla has not provided an immediate comment on the situation, while the Swedish Transport Agency remains unavailable for comment. The standoff between IF Metall and Tesla, with the involvement of other sympathetic unions, underscores the challenges the electric car giant faces in navigating labour relations in Sweden.

The legal battle signifies a new dimension to the ongoing dispute, adding complexity to the negotiations and highlighting the broader implications for Tesla’s operations in the country.
