Tesla is reportedly in the process of enhancing its “gigacasting” technology to enable the die casting of almost all underbody parts for its vehicles as a single piece, as per a report from the Shanghai Securities News citing anonymous sources close to the automaker.
The report, based on a recent visit to Tesla’s Shanghai factory, did not specify when or where this upgrade would occur.
Tesla’s Innovative Die Casting Approach
This development follows earlier media reports, which indicated that Tesla was making strides in the direction of die casting the majority of the underbody components for its electric vehicles in a single piece.
The die casting approach, which involves using immense presses with clamping pressures ranging from 6,000 to 9,000 tons, has already been employed by Tesla in its “gigacasting” process for forming the front and rear structures of its Model Y, significantly reducing production expenses.
Significant Cost Savings
Since 2020, Tesla’s Shanghai plant, the company’s largest globally, has been utilizing die casting to create the rear sections of the Model Y. This adoption of “gigacasting” technology has resulted in a notable 40% reduction in related costs for Tesla.
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers like Xpeng and Geely’s Zeekr have been following Tesla’s lead by incorporating “gigapressing” technology into their manufacturing processes. This technology not only helps reduce vehicle weight but also lowers production expenses, aligning with the broader industry trend toward cost-effective electric vehicle manufacturing.
