Tesla asserts “moral obligation” amid autopilot scrutiny

U.S. automaker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) responded vehemently on Monday to a Washington Post investigation that raised serious concerns about crashes involving its Autopilot driver assistant system. The company defended its position, citing a “moral obligation” to enhance Autopilot’s safety features and expand its accessibility.

Autopilot’s moral imperative

Tesla, in a firm statement, expressed its unwavering commitment to improving Autopilot based on data reflecting enhanced safety metrics during system engagement. The company asserted a “moral obligation” to continue refining the driver assistant system, aligning with its mission to make roads safer. The Washington Post investigation highlighted eight crashes between 2016 and 2023 where Autopilot was reportedly activated in scenarios beyond its designed operational parameters. Last month, a Florida judge found “reasonable evidence” that Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, and other executives were aware of a defective Autopilot system. This ruling marked a setback for Tesla, following its success in two product liability trials in California earlier this year. The judge’s decision raised questions about the company’s safety practices and management’s accountability.
