Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd (TPEM), a Tata Motors subsidiary, has announced that its Punch.ev and Nexon.ev models have received 5-star safety ratings in the Bharat-NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) tests. This achievement makes Tata Motors the only automaker in India with a full range of 5-star rated SUVs across both Bharat-NCAP and Global-NCAP tests.
The Punch.ev set a new record with the highest scores to date: 31.46/32 for adult occupant protection (AOP) and 45/49 for child occupant protection (COP). The Nexon.ev also performed exceptionally well, scoring 29.86/32 for AOP and 44.95/49 for COP.
India’s Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, congratulated Tata Motors on this milestone. He emphasised that the certification aligns with the government’s vision for safer vehicles and supports the goal of making India a global automobile hub.
“My heartfelt congratulations to Tata Motors on this significant milestone as the Nexon.ev and Punch.ev receive a 5-star rating, under Bharat-NCAP. The certification aligns with the Indian government’s vision for safer vehicles in the country and emphasizes the role of Bharat-NCAP in making India’s automobile industry ‘aatmanirbhar’. The Bharat-NCAP car safety standard is pivotal in realising the government’s vision to make India a global automobile hub and increase its export worthiness in International markets.”
Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of TPEM and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, highlighted the company’s commitment to safety across all vehicle price points. He expressed pride in Tata Motors being the first manufacturer to lead the Bharat-NCAP protocol with outstanding results.
The Punch.ev, launched recently, has gained popularity among EV enthusiasts and first-time buyers, with over 35 per cent of owners coming from rural markets. It has already attracted over 10,000 customers with its long range, performance, and advanced features.
The Nexon.ev, credited with kickstarting India’s EV revolution, has sold over 68,000 units since its 2020 launch. Its 2023 update further raised the bar in the Indian EV industry with its digital-first design and technology-driven experience.
This achievement underscores Tata Motors’ leadership in both electric vehicle technology and automotive safety in the Indian market.
