Tata Tiago and Tigor Set for Dual CNG Tanks

Following the pioneering CNG dual-cylinder design in the Altroz iCNG, Tata Motors is extending this innovation to its Tiago and Tigor models. Tata has patented this groundbreaking industry-first fitment, providing a unique solution for CNG vehicles.

Tata Motors has already introduced the industry’s first CNG dual-cylinder setup in the Altroz iCNG, enhancing its lineup of CNG-powered cars. This technology, replacing the conventional single large cylinder with two cylinders beneath the boot floor, liberates 210 litres of boot space while enhancing safety.

The ALFA platform on which the Altroz is built was specifically designed to accommodate this dual-cylinder setup. The twin cylinders beneath the luggage area not only optimize space but also offer enhanced safety by protecting valves and pipes under the load floor. This design consideration contributes to improved rear crash safety.

Tata Motors plans to apply the same dual-cylinder setup to the Tiago and Tigor models, moving away from the current single-tank design. Despite being based on the older X0 platform, these models are poised to benefit from the space-efficient innovation, though packaging underbody-mounted spare wheels remains a consideration.

The company’s commitment to innovation is evident in its patent filing for the twin-cylinder CNG setup. This setup will also be featured in the upcoming Punch iCNG, which aligns with the ALFA platform’s capabilities, as showcased at Auto Expo 2023.

Looking forward, Tata Motors could extend this technology to the Nexon compact SUV, aiming to cater to segments transitioning away from diesel. With the CNG demand surging due to favorable pricing, Tata aims to capitalize on the trend, targeting sales of around 150,000 CNG-powered vehicles annually.

Tata Motors’ foray into the CNG market began in FY2022 with the Tiago and Tigor models. Despite the recent entry, the company holds a 13% share of India’s CNG car market. The recent CNG price reduction further propelled demand, with Tata Motors expecting substantial gains through the Altroz CNG and future Punch CNG models.

In a strategic push to align with evolving market demands, Tata Motors continues to demonstrate its commitment to pioneering, space-efficient, and environmentally friendly solutions.
