A recent survey commissioned by Anyline, a company specialising in AI-powered mobile data capture, has unveiled significant safety concerns regarding tyre care and maintenance practices among rideshare drivers. This revelation comes just before National Tyre Safety Week, an initiative by the U.S. Tyre Manufacturers Association aimed at educating drivers on the critical role of tyres in road safety.
According to the survey, while over 80% of rideshare drivers recognise the importance of safety for their passengers, only 34% consider themselves highly knowledgeable about tyre safety. A troubling 23% of respondents believe that a tread depth of 1/32 of an inch or less is safe, which is contrary to expert recommendations. Although 64% of drivers claim to check their tyres regularly, almost half rely on visual inspections, a method deemed inadequate by tyre specialists.
“Our survey reveals some seriously eye-opening information – not only for rideshare users, but for the drivers and companies they work for,” stated Chris Garcia, head of U.S. automotive at Anyline. “Ridesharing has revolutionised the way people get to and from their destinations, and yet the industry is relying on outdated or insufficient tyre management practices. We believe more can and should be done to leverage next-generation tyre monitoring and management tools to help protect passengers and make our streets safer.”
Frequent tyre-related emergencies
The survey also disclosed that over one-third (38%) of rideshare drivers have faced tyre-related emergencies, such as sudden pressure loss, while on duty. Additionally, more than 40% of drivers have had to cancel or delay rides due to vehicle maintenance issues. These statistics underline the need for proper tyre inspection methods and the potential benefits of data-driven tools for real-time tyre monitoring.
Inconsistent maintenance practices
The survey highlighted inconsistent tyre maintenance practices among rideshare drivers. Approximately 35% of respondents admitted to checking their tyres infrequently, ranging from quarterly to annually. Another 21% only check tyre conditions when prompted by a vehicle warning alert. Common reasons for not checking tyres regularly include forgetfulness, lack of knowledge, and time constraints.
Interest in technology solutions
Interestingly, more than half of the surveyed drivers (56%) expressed a willingness to measure tyre tread depth more frequently if they had access to technology that enabled them to do so via a smartphone or other camera-enabled devices. This indicates a significant demand for technology-driven solutions that can facilitate easier and more accurate tyre maintenance.
