As the cycling world gears up for the 111th Tour de France, Škoda Auto is celebrating a milestone of its own – 21 consecutive years as the official main partner of the world’s most prestigious cycling event. This year’s Tour, commencing on June 29 with the Grand Départ in Florence, Italy, marks a significant departure from tradition. For the first time in its history, the race will conclude in Nice rather than Paris, due to the imminent start of the Olympic Games in the French capital.
The Czech automaker’s commitment to the Tour de France is exemplified by its provision of a comprehensive fleet of 205 vehicles to support the race. Among these, the all-electric Škoda Enyaq will take centre stage as the ‘Red Car’, serving as the mobile command centre for Tour director Christian Prudhomme. This technologically advanced vehicle, equipped with a panoramic sunroof and cutting-edge communication systems, will lead the peloton of 176 cyclists across 21 stages and nearly 3,500 kilometres.
Martin Jahn, Škoda Board Member for Sales and Marketing, emphasised the company’s deep-rooted connection to professional cycling. “For over 20 years, Škoda has been closely associated with professional cycling,” Jahn stated. He highlighted the recent extension of Škoda’s partnership with the Tour’s organiser, A.S.O., until 2028, underlining the brand’s long-term commitment to the sport.
This year’s Tour route presents a diverse challenge for the riders, featuring eight flat sections, four hilly stages, seven mountain stages, and two-time trials. The peloton will traverse the Italian Apennines, the Italian and French Alps, the Massif Central, and the Pyrenees, passing through four countries: Italy, San Marino, Monaco, and France.
Škoda’s involvement extends beyond merely providing vehicles. For the 14th consecutive year, the Škoda Design Team is responsible for crafting the crystal glass trophies awarded to the overall winner and the leaders of various classifications. Moreover, for a decade, the company has sponsored the green jersey worn by the leader of the points classification.
To engage cycling enthusiasts worldwide, Škoda has launched the ‘What’s Your Tour’ campaign. Through the WeLoveCycling website and social media channels, fans can access exclusive content, participate in contests, and potentially win exciting prizes. The grand prize is a three-day trip to this year’s Tour, offering a unique behind-the-scenes experience.
Former British professional cyclist Cameron Jeffers will provide fans with insider insights, atmosphere reports, and interviews directly from the race. This content will be available under the #whatsyourtourde hashtag across various social media platforms. Additionally, the Tour de France Mobile App, powered by Škoda, allows supporters to follow live action, receive updates, and enjoy captivating stories from behind the scenes.
Škoda’s commitment to cycling is deeply rooted in its history. The company’s founders, Václav Laurin and Václav Klement, initially established a bicycle factory in Mladá Boleslav in 1895. This heritage continues to influence Škoda’s product range and corporate identity.
Beyond the Tour de France, Škoda Auto supports a total of 20 international professional and amateur sports events. The company also sponsors the Czech stage of the national amateur race L’Étape du Tour de France. Since 2022, Škoda has extended its support to the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, further demonstrating its commitment to promoting cycling at all levels.
As the 111th Tour de France unfolds, Škoda Auto’s enduring partnership serves as a testament to the brand’s dedication to cycling and its ability to innovate alongside the sport. With its extended commitment until 2028, Škoda is set to continue playing a crucial role in one of the world’s most celebrated sporting events for years to come.
