While pricing remains under wraps until June, we can expect the PHEV to command a premium over the full-hybrid, which starts from GBP 38,195. Likely rivals include the Audi Q3 Sportback TFSI e and the Cupra Formentor eHybrid, both priced north of GBP 40,000.
Building upon the 200PS foundation of the full-hybrid Rafale, the E-Tech 4×4 gets a significant power boost. The 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine receives a new turbocharger, bumping power from 130PS to 150PS, with torque rising from 205Nm to 230Nm.
The real magic lies in the electric motors. The PHEV Rafale boasts a total of three electric motors – a 70PS main motor on the front axle, a potent 136PS motor on the rear axle (granting all-wheel drive), and a 36PS starter generator motor nestled within the transmission. This electrifying combination delivers a combined output of 300PS, propelling the car from 0-100kmph in a brisk 6.4 seconds – a full 2.5 seconds quicker than the full-hybrid.
Renault boasts an impressive electric-only range of up to 100kmph, achievable thanks to the 22kWh battery pack. The PHEV Rafale can maintain electric propulsion even at speeds of up to 135kmph. When the battery depletes, the official WLTP combined fuel economy figure stands at a remarkable 403.5mpg, with a further 48.7mpg achievable when solely relying on the petrol engine. Replenishing the battery from 0-100% takes approximately two hours and 55 minutes using a 7.4kWh charging rate.
Visually, the PHEV Rafale maintains a close resemblance to its full-hybrid counterpart. However, Renault introduces a new top-tier trim level – the “Atelier Alpine” – alongside the existing “Esprit Alpine” option. The Atelier Alpine brings a touch of sophistication with Satin Summit Blue paint, a blacked-out spoiler, exclusive 21-inch alloy wheels, and blue floor mats for the interior.
Performance enthusiasts will appreciate the chassis tweaks bestowed upon the Atelier Alpine. New dampers, springs, and anti-roll bars at both ends elevate handling prowess. Four-wheel steering enhances agility, while bespoke “Agility Control” modes provide granular control over braking, regenerative braking, stability control, and steering. Continental sports tyres further bolster the driving experience, and a forward-facing camera scans the road, adjusting the suspension for optimal comfort.
Inside, the familiar 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and 12-inch central touchscreen grace the dashboard, offering a premium and user-friendly experience. Standard features across all Rafale models include a wireless smartphone charger, automatic climate control, front and rear parking sensors, and a rear-view camera.
