Ride-sharing platform Rapido has expanded its electric vehicle (EV) auto fleet in Bengaluru, marking a significant step toward sustainable urban mobility. With over 4,000 drivers operating in two shifts, the company’s EV autos have completed more than 2.25 million rides, covering over 15.6 million kilometers. This transition to electric autos has helped cut down 1,036 tons of CO2 emissions, contributing to a greener urban transport system.
The initiative positions Rapido as a pioneer in the adoption of electric autos in Bengaluru. “We take immense pride in being the first in our category to introduce EV autos in Bengaluru,” said Pavan Guntupalli, Co-founder of Rapido. He emphasised that the move is part of the company’s broader sustainability goals. “Along with the environmental benefits, we are creating sustainable job opportunities for our gig workforce, enabling them to maximise their earnings while making a positive environmental impact.”
The environmental benefits of Rapido’s EV fleet are coupled with substantial economic gains. The company reported that its drivers in Bengaluru have collectively earned INR 178 million, highlighting the potential for increased earnings through EV adoption. By reducing operating costs, electric autos have provided a more cost-effective option for drivers, allowing them to take home a larger share of their earnings.
Looking to the future, Rapido aims to expand its EV fleet to 1,500 vehicles and onboard around 5,000 drivers in Bengaluru by 2025. This planned growth is aligned with the company’s mission to create more job opportunities while promoting a cleaner and more sustainable future. The initiative is also part of Rapido’s larger vision to lead the way in sustainable mobility across India, with plans to roll out similar EV operations in other cities.
Rapido’s efforts come at a crucial time when urban areas are grappling with increasing pollution and congestion. By investing in EVs, the company is not only reducing emissions but also setting a precedent for other ride-sharing platforms to follow. As Rapido continues to expand its fleet, it remains at the forefront of innovation in shared transportation, driving the shift toward greener urban mobility.
