Polestar, a Swedish electric car manufacturer, has formalized an agreement with South Korean battery maker SK On to supply battery cell modules for the forthcoming Polestar 5 electric 4-door GT.
Partnership with SK On for battery supply
The collaboration stems from the selection of SK On by Polestar, primarily due to the Korean firm’s superior battery cell technology. SK On’s technology offers high-performing chemistry, enabling fast charging, efficient discharging, and providing an impressive driving range.
The high-nickel battery cell modules to be supplied by SK On consist of ultra-long 56 cm cells with exceptionally high energy density.
Significance of the agreement
Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, noted the productive nature of their relationship with SK On. The partnership began with the signing of an MOU and SK On’s subsequent investment in the Polestar brand. Ingenlath highlighted that the Polestar 5 is making significant progress and will be equipped with high-capacity batteries to meet the performance expectations of the grand tourer.
Jee Dong-seob, CEO of SK On, expressed delight at the collaboration with Polestar, focusing on their joint venture for Polestar’s top-tier EV model. The agreement signifies a strengthening partnership with Polestar, aiming to create new opportunities in the electric vehicle market.

Polestar 5, the upcoming electric 4-door GT, is on track for production starting in 2025. The vehicle is an evolution of the Polestar Precept concept car and is being showcased in a YouTube documentary series called “From Concept to Car.” This series provides an in-depth look into the journey of the Polestar 5 from concept to reality.
