Adrian Newey, the groundbreaking Formula 1 designer associated with Red Bull Racing’s winning history, is departing the team after almost twenty years. Red Bull announced Newey’s departure, marking the end of an era lasting nearly 20 years.
A legacy of success
Newey joined Red Bull already in 2006, and then, since that time, he has been the pivot behind the team that was once doing poorly but eventually became the winner. With his technical guidance, Red Bull attained an outstanding competitive performance, winning six constructors’ titles and seven drivers’ titles which established them as one of the top teams in F1.
New challenges ahead
Newey will be stepping back from his Chief Technical Officer role in the first quarter of 2025. He will shift his focus to the final development and delivery of Red Bull’s highly anticipated hypercar, the RB17.
Newey said, “For almost two decades, it has been my great honour to have played a key role in Red Bull Racing’s progress. However, I feel now is an opportune moment to seek new challenges for myself.”
A testament to success
Christian Horner, Red Bull Team Principal and CEO, characterized Newey as a “true legend” and emphasized that his contribution was the major factor in the team’s success stories. Horner showed the appreciation for Newey’s efforts by calling his collaboration with him an unforgettable and rewarding experience.
He said, “All of our greatest moments from the past 20 years have come with Adrian’s hand on the technical tiller. His vision and brilliance have helped us to 13 titles in 20 seasons.”
“His exceptional ability to conceptualise beyond F1 and bring wider inspiration to bear on the design of grand prix cars, his remarkable talent for embracing change and finding the most rewarding areas of the rules to focus on, and his relentless will to win have helped Red Bull Racing to become a greater force than I think even the late Dietrich Mateschitz might have imagined,” Horner added.
Uncertain future
Although some doubt where next Newey would be likely to move to, the fact that he is incomparably accomplished in the F1 industry can’t be ignored. Having clinched 12 constructors’ titles so far, Newey is undoubtedly a top man in the Formula 1 paddock, with his services coveted by teams like Ferrari and Aston Martin.
