Mobileye and Valeo Partner to Develop Imaging Radars for ADAS

The collaboration between Mobileye and Valeo centers on the development of imaging radar technology, which is set to play a pivotal role in the evolution of autonomous mobility.

At the IAA Mobility 2023 event in Munich on September 4, 2023, Mobileye and Valeo announced a significant collaboration aimed at delivering state-of-the-art imaging radars for the next generation of driver assistance and automated driving features. This partnership seeks to harness their combined expertise to swiftly introduce cutting-edge technology to automakers worldwide, enabling more intelligent vehicles and enhancing road safety.

Empowering Advanced Driver Assistance

The collaboration between Mobileye and Valeo centers on the development of imaging radar technology, which is set to play a pivotal role in the evolution of autonomous mobility. Imaging radar is poised to become an integral part of sensing systems for automated driving, enabling more advanced hands-off Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and eyes-off automated driving features on both highways and urban streets.

Industry Voices on the Collaboration

Nimrod Nehushtan, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Strategy at Mobileye, expressed the significance of this partnership, stating, “Mobileye and Valeo’s Imaging radar collaboration significantly advances a new and exciting phase in automotive safety and performance.” He emphasized the commitment to exceeding industry expectations and providing automakers with cutting-edge technology while benefiting from Valeo’s capabilities in customization, industrialization, testing, and support.

Marc Vrecko, President of Valeo’s Comfort and Driving Assistance Systems Business Group, highlighted the collaborative nature of the partnership and its importance in advancing autonomous mobility. He underscored Valeo’s technological leadership in ADAS and its ability to produce innovative technologies at scale.

Advanced Imaging Radar Technology

Mobileye’s imaging radar technology incorporates advanced architectural elements, including Massive MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) antenna design, a high-end in-house developed radio frequency design, and high-fidelity sampling. These features enable precise object detection and offer a higher dynamic range. The integrated system-on-chip design maximizes processor efficiency, while world-leading algorithms interpret radar data, creating a detailed four-dimensional image of surroundings up to 300 meters away. The radar’s wide field-of-view, with a 140-degree range at medium distance and 170-degree range in close proximity, ensures accurate detection of pedestrians, vehicles, and obstructions, even in congested urban environments.

Market Interest and Demand

Mobileye has already witnessed significant interest from the market for its imaging radar, particularly as automakers seek to expand the operational design domains (ODD) of their automated driving features. In parallel, Valeo has received indications of robust demand for imaging radar solutions that offer optimal performance.

Valeo’s Role in System Design and Production

As a leader in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Valeo has been at the forefront of radar technology development since 2006. In this collaboration, Valeo will take the lead in system design, integrating Mobileye’s groundbreaking imaging radar technology, along with its corresponding software and algorithms embedded in the Mobileye Radar chipset, into Valeo’s automotive software and hardware radar solutions.

Valeo is committed to meeting the latest and most stringent requirements set by automotive players, including functional safety, cybersecurity, fast communication protocols with vehicle networks, electromagnetic robustness, and validation of overall system performance and endurance throughout the vehicle’s lifespan. Leveraging its expertise in producing cutting-edge automotive technologies at scale and its global industrial footprint, Valeo will be responsible for the complete production of the Imaging radar solution.

This partnership between Mobileye and Valeo builds upon their successful history of collaboration in delivering front-facing cameras and other driver assistance solutions. Since 2015, the two companies have collectively delivered more than 15 million Smart Front Cameras worldwide, further highlighting their commitment to advancing automotive safety and technology.
