SAIC-owned MG Motor has unveiled the MG3 model in the European market with hybrid technology. The model was earlier only available to customers in the UK. The British automotive manufacturer is tapping into the hybrid market as demand for pure electric vehicles have slowed due to high cost and lack of charging infrastructure. The new Hybrid+ system used in MG3 comes with a larger battery and a more powerful electric motor.
Design highlights
The new MG3 sports a longer and wider profile as compared to the model it replaces, adding up more interior space for occupants, as well as providing more boot space. It has been designed by MG’s Shanghai studio and features styling enhancements such as alloy wheels and LED headlights. A new colour palette is available for the model including seven paint schemes – Pebble Black, Dover White, Cosmic Silver, Pastel Yellow, Diamond Red, Hampstead Grey, Como Blue.
Engine, Battery and Motor
MG3 produces a combined 143kW power and returns economy figures of 4.4l/100km and 100g/km CO2. Thanks to the 1.83kWh battery, the vehicle offers longer electric-only driving range, significantly boosting efficiency. The vehicle comes equipped with a 75kW 1.5-litre petrol engine paired to a three-speed automatic transmission, a100kW electric motor, as well as separate generator motor, enabling a wide variety of powertrain operating modes.
Drive modes
The B-segment hatchback can operate in five driving modes – EV, Series, Series and Charge, Drive and Charge and Parallel. These drive modes are automatically selected in the Hybrid+ technology. A suite of three different drive modes – Eco, Standard and Sport – allows the driver to play with the vehicle’s responsiveness and manage fuel efficiency, as required.
Cabin highlights
MG is offering the hybrid hatchback in three variants – Standard, Comfort, and Luxury. Some of the standout features inside the vehicle include a twin-screen cockpit, seven-inch digital instrument screen, as well as a 10.25’-inch central infotainment system. Graphics and responsiveness of the twin floating screens have been enhanced by the MG engineers in Europe and China, together. A bank of piano-key switches on the centre console maximise safety and convenience while driving.
Feature highlights
The automaker is offering Satellite navigation and smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay/Android Auto as standard across variants. Other feature highlights include air conditioning, six-speaker audio system with Bluetooth connection, four USB ports, and rear parking sensors and camera. High-end trim comes equipped with leather-style upholstery, keyless entry, heated front seats and steering wheel, as well as 360-degree camera.
