With the new CLE 53, Mercedes-AMG aims to shake things up in the entry-level performance coupé segment. It is also the first AMG derivative of the new two-door model that has come in as an indirect replacement for the C-Class and E-Class coupe and cabriolet models.
Over the standard model, the CLE 53 AMG features a contoured bonnet, a redesigned front apron with an ‘A-shape’ shark nose, larger air inlets, flared front and rear fenders, a wider track (by 58mm at the front and 75mm at the rear), and 19-inch AMG wheels that can be optionally upsized to 20-inch units. The redesigned rear apron with twin double tailpipes also exudes a more muscular look.
Powering the CLE 53 AMG is a modified mild-hybrid 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder turbo engine (M256) with assistance from a new exhaust gas turbocharger (larger, offers more boost pressure) and an additional electric compressor (for increase in mid-speed performance). The engine features optimised combustion chambers and fuel injection, with redesigned inlet and outlet channels, and new piston rings. The powertrain develops 442.5bhp and 560Nm of continuous torque. The latter can go up to 600Nm for 12 seconds, thanks to an over-boost function. With 48V mild-hybrid assistance, the second-generation integrated starter generator (ISG) works to enhance the CLE 53’s efficiency as well as hybrid performance. It can temporarily supply an additional 22.8bhp and 205Nm of torque, apart from managing the start-stop and energy-recuperation systems.
The engine transmits power to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic AMG Speedshift gearbox and an AMG-spec variable 4Matic all-wheel drive system (the CLE 53 can function as a fully front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive or a fully rear-wheel drive). The 250km/h top speed (electronically limited) can be increased to 270km/h with the optional AMG Driver’s Package.
Drivers can choose from multiple drive modes as part of the AMG Dynamic Select (Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual). The AMG Dynamics control system, with Basic, Advanced, and Pro level settings, works in conjunction with the drive modes to alter the vehicle’s electronic stability program (ESP) and all-wheel drive settings. The CLE 53 also benefits from AMG Ride Control chassis and suspension, a three-stage AMG speed-sensitive steering and standard rear-axle steering (with a max. turning angle of 2.5 degrees).
The interior highlights include a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, an 11.9-inch infotainment screen – both run the latest generation of the MBUX operating system – and 64-colour ambient lighting. The upholstery can be specced in Artico leather or black Microcut microfibre.
At the moment, there is no update from Mercedes-AMG regarding the CLE 53’s market availability.
