Maruti Suzuki has introduced the highly anticipated Jimny SUV to the Indian market, offering prices ranging from Rs 12.74 lakh to Rs 15.05 lakh (ex-showroom, India). This dynamic entry into the SUV segment has garnered substantial attention, with over 30,000 bookings recorded since its unveiling at the Auto Expo. The commencement of deliveries is set for mid-June in a phased manner.
India-Exclusive Development and Manufacturing
Developed exclusively for the Indian market, the Jimny debuts as the first country to receive the five-door version. Maruti Suzuki’s Gurugram plant will be the production hub for the Jimny, which will not only cater to domestic demand but also serve as an export base for global markets.
Remarkable Milestone for Maruti
Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, emphasized the significance of the Jimny’s launch. As a vehicle that has consistently defied norms since its inception in 1970, the Jimny represents a milestone in Maruti’s SUV portfolio. Takeuchi expressed delight in the response and announced that India will serve as the “mother plant” for the five-door Jimny.
Robust Performance and Off-Road Capabilities
Equipped with a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine generating 105hp and 134Nm, the Jimny offers both a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Distinguished by Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro 4WD system, the SUV boasts a manual transfer case, low range gearbox with ‘2WD-high’, ‘4WD-high’, and ‘4WD-low’ options. Its rugged chassis, 3-link rigid axle suspension, and electronic traction control system contribute to formidable off-road prowess.
Advanced Trims and Features
The Alpha trim stands out with an array of features including automatic LED headlamps, a 9.0-inch SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment system, automatic climate control, cruise control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and more. Safety remains a priority, as the Jimny incorporates six airbags, ESP, and hill-hold assist as standard.
Distinctive Design and Dimensions
The Jimny’s signature design elements include upright pillars, circular headlamps, slatted grille, flared wheel arches, and a tailgate-mounted spare tire. Measuring 3,985mm in length, the five-door model possesses a 2,590mm wheelbase – 340mm longer than the three-door variant. It stands 1,645mm wide and 1,720mm tall, offering a bold and capable presence on the road.
Thriving in a Competitive Segment
As the Jimny enters the Indian market, it enters competition within the lifestyle off-roader category. Positioned alongside models like the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha, the Jimny brings its distinct character, robust performance, and Maruti’s legacy to this rapidly evolving segment.
