MAHLE is set to showcase its groundbreaking achievement in battery technology at the upcoming IAA Mobility 2023 event. The company’s engineers have introduced a bionic structure for battery cooling channels, drawing inspiration from nature’s designs. This inventive cooling plate enhances thermodynamic performance and structural durability, resulting in a remarkable 10% increase in cooling capacity, 20% reduction in pressure loss, and a more even temperature distribution.
Utilizing the principles found in natural structures like coral, MAHLE’s innovation revolutionizes cooling technology. The bionic battery cooling plate offers benefits in multiple aspects, including higher efficiency, faster charging, extended battery life, and reduced environmental impact. Through its ingenious design, MAHLE has also managed to decrease material usage by up to 15%, thereby contributing to a 15% reduction in CO2 emissions.
This trailblazing bionic battery cooling plate will be unveiled to the public for the first time at the IAA Mobility 2023 in Munich from September 4 to 10, 2023. Dr. Uli Christian Blessing, head of global development thermal management at MAHLE, explains, “With our new battery cooling plate, we are breaking away from technical geometries and instead using natural structures, such as the coral shape – with an outstanding effect for our cooling technology and great advantages in structural stability to boot.”
Lithium-ion batteries demand precise temperature control to ensure optimal performance and longevity. MAHLE’s innovative approach adapts the flow rate of coolant according to temperature differences, resulting in enhanced heat transfer efficiency. This dynamic cooling technique lowers peak temperatures and extends the overall temperature range, directly contributing to the battery’s reliability and lifespan.
Beyond its performance benefits, the bionic structure also offers design advantages. The increased rigidity enables the use of thinner materials, enhancing effectiveness. Additionally, the innovative design allows for new manufacturing processes with lower energy and material consumption, aligning with sustainability goals.
MAHLE’s history of pioneering battery cooling technology spans over a decade, showcasing their expertise in enhancing efficiency and performance across a range of vehicles from small cars to large commercial ones.
At IAA Mobility 2023, MAHLE’s exhibit will feature their innovative bionic battery cooling plate, alongside a range of advanced technologies that enhance air quality, interior comfort, and battery diagnostics in vehicles. The introduction of the bionic battery cooling plate underlines MAHLE’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology for a more efficient and sustainable future.
