Li Auto unveils MEGA EV with 500 km range

The MEGA MPV is the inaugural model produced at Li Auto's Beijing plant, with a capacity of 100,000 units annually.

Chinese automaker Li Auto announced the commencement of mass production for its fully electric MEGA MPV, featuring rapid-charging technology and targeting the affluent Chinese family market.

Rapid charging and impressive range

The MEGA MPV, equipped with 800-volt charging architecture and CATL’s Qilin batteries, boasts a 500 km range on a swift 12-minute charge. Li Auto aims to alleviate EV range anxiety with its fast-charging capabilities.

Pre-orders and competitive market strategy

Li Auto has initiated pre-orders in China, positioning the MEGA against established global brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi in the large-sized MPV market. With over 10,000 orders received, the company aims to surpass competitors in China by 2024.

Target audience and market dynamics

The MEGA MPV is tailored for wealthier millennial Chinese families, offering a spacious design catering to increased family sizes. The model fills a gap in the market where existing options are limited, primarily comprising expensive alternatives like the Toyota Alphard and the GM GL8.

Sales projections and market standing

Analyst projections from China Merchants Bank International Securities estimate monthly sales volumes of 5,000 units or higher for the MEGA. Positioned as the preferred choice for family users in the 500,000 yuan price range, Li Auto envisions market leadership in this segment.

Manufacturing at Beijing plant

The MEGA MPV is the inaugural model produced at Li Auto’s Beijing plant, with a capacity of 100,000 units annually. The company, founded in 2015, has focused on extended-range hybrid SUVs priced above 300,000 yuan, ranking seventh in sales volume for electric and hybrid cars in China during the first ten months of the year.

Financial performance

Li Auto reported a net income of 2.82 billion yuan in Q3, coupled with revenue of 34.68 billion yuan, underscoring the company’s financial stability and growth in the competitive Chinese automotive market.
