Kia’s forthcoming EV9 luxury SUV, set for a 2024 release in Europe, Asia, and the US, is making headlines not just for its electric capabilities but for its custom-tailored sound system. The vehicle, developed in collaboration with British audio pioneers Meridian Audio, boasts a 14-speaker system specifically designed for the unique audio requirements of electric vehicles (EVs). This marks the third Kia vehicle to incorporate Meridian technology, following the K8 luxury sports sedan and the EV6 premium electric crossover.
Meridian’s sonic solution
Meridian Audio, known for pushing the boundaries in audio technology, faced the challenge of creating an immersive acoustic experience in the distinct environment of an electric vehicle. With electric-only models like the EV9 producing different frequencies and sources of background noise compared to traditional combustion engine vehicles, Meridian focused on a software-driven approach to optimise the audio experience.
The complexity of EV acoustics
According to John Buchanan, CEO of Meridian Audio, the complexity of noise sources and their frequency profiles in EVs presented a unique challenge. These noise sources are typically at higher frequencies, affecting the perception of sound positions. Managing this complex acoustic environment required a shift from hardware to software, employing Meridian’s proprietary Digital Signal Processing (DSP) algorithms.
Tailored DSP technologies
Meridian’s suite of DSP technologies for the EV9 includes:
Meridian RE-Q: Optimises the audio system to the precise acoustics of the vehicle cabin.
Meridian Digital Precision: Maximises the signal-to-noise ratio, preserving the natural rhythm of the performance.
Meridian Horizon: Provides multi-channel audio from two-channel stereo and native 5.1 content, delivering a surround sound experience.
Meridian lntelli-Q Data-Driven Equalisation: Psychoacoustically optimises audio playback by responding to changes in the in-car acoustic environment.
Addressing unique EV inputs
Meridian’s Intelli-Q technology allows the sound system to manage the unique acoustic inputs of an electric vehicle. Unlike earlier systems that merely increased volume in response to background noise, Intelli-Q reacts to the profile of the background noise, adjusting frequencies based on factors like speed and road conditions.
Innovative subwoofer design
The EV9 incorporates an open-air connected subwoofer (OCS), eliminating the need for a large box enclosure. This design choice enhances bass performance without the limitations associated with conventional enclosures, such as packaging volume, resonances, and rattles.
Collaboration benefits
Kia Corporation’s Head of Product Planning, Byungchul Cho, expressed excitement about integrating Meridian’s authentic and natural sound into the new EV9, creating a special British premium sound experience for customers. Dr. Soonkwon Paik, Vice President of Infotainment Engineering Group at Hyundai Motor Group, highlighted the collaboration’s goal of providing a unique sound experience for Kia’s luxury car customers.
As Kia expands its presence in the luxury vehicle segment, the integration of advanced audio technology demonstrates the brand’s commitment to delivering a high-end, immersive driving experience with the EV9.
