J&K commits to clean mobility, inducts 100 electric buses

Jammu & Kashmir is ushering in a new era of eco-friendly urban transport with the induction of 100 state-of-the-art electric buses in the cities of Srinagar and Jammu. Tata Motors, India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, has supplied the first batch of these zero-emission buses, marking a significant milestone in the region’s commitment to cleaner and sustainable public transportation.

The electric buses are part of a larger initiative led by the Housing and Urban Development Department, Government of Jammu & Kashmir. The project aims to establish an environmentally and financially sustainable network of public transportation for Srinagar and Jammu. These modern electric buses, equipped with cutting-edge technology and advanced battery systems, will provide the residents of Srinagar with a safe, comfortable, and eco-friendly commuting option.

Flag-off ceremony attended by key dignitaries

The official flag-off ceremony of the electric bus fleet was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including Manoj Sinha, Lieutenant General, J&K, Arun Kumar Mehta, Chief Secretary, J&K, Junaid Azim Mattu, Mayor, Srinagar, and several others. The event was a celebration of the region’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility and reducing congestion on the roads.

Lieutenant Governor’s vision

Manoj Sinha, Lieutenant Governor, J&K, expressed his enthusiasm for the electric buses, emphasizing that they would revolutionize public transport in Srinagar. He commended the efforts to improve last-mile passenger transport and acknowledged the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in making this initiative a reality.

Principal Secretary’s perspective

Prashant Goyal, Principal Secretary, Housing & Urban Development Department, J&K, highlighted the importance of this partnership between J&K and Tata Motors. He stressed that this collaboration would help ease congestion on the city’s roads and enhance the last-mile passenger transport system in Srinagar.

Athar Aamir Khan, CEO, Srinagar Smart City Ltd, reflected on the monumental transformation in public transport that these electric buses represent for Srinagar. He noted that this initiative would decongest the city, making reliable, affordable, and comfortable public transport accessible to all citizens.

Tata Motors, a prominent player in the Indian commercial vehicle industry, has been at the forefront of sustainable urban mobility. The company has supplied over 1,000 electric buses across various Indian cities, accumulating more than 9.6 crore kilometres and maintaining an impressive uptime of over 95%.

The Tata Ultra EV, with its full-electric drivetrain, offers a new standard for urban city commuting. It optimizes energy consumption, resulting in minimal energy usage and operational costs. The electric bus prioritizes comfort and safety, featuring electronic stability control, electronic brake distribution, air suspension, an Intelligent Transport System (ITS), a panic button, and more advanced features.
