A political action committee (PAC) supported by billionaire Elon Musk is under investigation in Michigan for possible breaches of state laws, according to a spokesperson from the Michigan Secretary of State’s office. The PAC in question, known as America PAC, has been scrutinised for allegedly acquiring detailed voter information from Michigan residents and other states through its website’s “register to vote” section. This has raised concerns about potential misuse of personal data.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, confirmed his involvement in creating a PAC focused on supporting certain candidates but has not explicitly committed to any endorsements or pledges. Despite this, the Michigan Secretary of State’s office has initiated a review of America PAC’s activities to ensure compliance with state regulations.
“While the America PAC is a federal political action committee, the Department is examining their activities to ascertain if there have been any violations of state law. We will refer any potential violations to the Michigan Attorney General’s office as necessary,” a spokesperson for Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson stated.
The spokesperson also emphasised the importance of transparency regarding how personal information is used by PACs, particularly those claiming to facilitate voter registration. The Michigan Department of State’s investigation is in its preliminary stages, and no specific details about the focus of the inquiry have been confirmed yet. Both the Michigan Attorney General’s office and America PAC have not responded to requests for comment, and Elon Musk could not be reached for a statement.
Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual, has publicly supported Donald Trump in the US presidential race and has voiced conservative opinions on various issues. He has criticised diversity initiatives, Biden’s immigration policies, and has claimed that Tesla and his space company, SpaceX, have received a “cold shoulder” from Democrats.
The ongoing investigation into America PAC highlights growing scrutiny of how political organisations manage and utilise personal data, particularly in the context of voter engagement and election support.
