In a significant development for the Indian automotive sector, the SIAM’s monthly sales report for October 2023 showcases a notable surge compared to the same period in 2022. The statistics provide insights into the performance of various vehicle categories, shedding light on emerging trends and consumer preferences.
Passenger vehicles: a marked increase
The total sales of passenger vehicles in October 2023 witnessed a commendable rise, reaching 3,89,714 units compared to 3,36,330 units in October 2022. This surge reflects a growing demand for personal mobility and a positive outlook among consumers.
Three wheelers: catering to diverse needs
Breaking down the three-wheeler segment, both passenger carriers and goods carriers experienced growth. Passenger carrier sales surged from 41,246 units in October 2022 to 60,889 units in October 2023, indicating an increasing reliance on this mode of transportation. Similarly, goods carrier sales saw a modest increase from 10,326 units to 11,659 units.
E-rickshaws and e-carts: a green revolution
The electric revolution is evident in the sales figures of E-Rickshaws and E-Carts. E-Rickshaw sales more than doubled, soaring from 2,323 units in October 2022 to 4,124 units in October 2023. Meanwhile, the E-Cart segment saw a marginal increase from 259 units to 268 units, signalling a slow but steady adoption of electric commercial vehicles.
Two wheelers dominate the market
Two-wheelers continue to dominate the Indian automotive landscape, with robust sales across various categories. Scooters and scooterettes recorded a substantial increase, rising from 5,13,450 units in October 2022 to an impressive 5,89,802 units in October 2023. Motorcycle and step-through sales also witnessed a noteworthy surge, climbing from 10,20,295 units to an impressive 12,52,835 units. Mopeds, though experiencing a more moderate increase, contributed to the overall growth, moving from 44,638 units to 53,162 units.
Quadricycles: niche market growth
In the niche market of quadricycles, there was a modest increase from 71 units in October 2022 to 81 units in October 2023. While the numbers may seem modest, this segment’s growth suggests a niche market finding its footing in the Indian automotive landscape.
