Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing showcases ‘Weather Station’ exhibition by MOON Kyungwon & JEON Joonho

Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing is presenting ‘Weather Station,’ an exhibition by the internationally acclaimed artist duo MOON Kyungwon & JEON Joonho, starting on May 31, 2024. The exhibition delves into the post-human perspective on climate change and aims to redefine the relationship between humans, non-humans, and nature in the era of artificial intelligence (AI).

‘Weather Station’ features artistic experiments carried out between Seoul and Beijing, embracing a coexistence notion in the face of climate change. The artists have been working as a duo since 2009, exploring the role of art amidst human challenges and the rapidly changing world through various technologies and mediums, including AI, video, installation arts, and drawings.

One of the highlights is ‘To Build a Fire’ (2022-2024), an AI-generated installation inspired by Jack London’s 1902 short story. Participants are guided by a quadruped robot, Spot, through an augmented temporal and spatial world, blurring the boundaries between humans and non-humans.

The video installation ‘News from Nowhere: ECLIPSE’ (2022-2024) depicts a gripping tale of a lone protagonist struggling for survival on a rescue ship, seeking to resolve fundamental inconsistencies between the real and unreal.

‘Mobile Agora’ (2022-2024) is a participatory platform made from recycled plastic chairs, designed for discussion and creative collaboration. Since 2012, MOON & JEON have collaborated with experts from various fields to propose alternative ideas for human survival in evolving global surroundings.

For the ‘To Build a Fire’ installation, Hyundai Motor Group’s Robotics LAB developed a lightweight carbon monitoring device integrated with an automatic control module and mounted on a Spot robot to measure real-time carbon data within the exhibition hall.

MOON & JEON also collaborated with designer Hyung-jin Kim to create a carbon calendar reinterpreting open data from various global cities, including Beijing.

The exhibition runs until February 9, 2025, and will be accompanied by discussions and interactive events engaging local experts from various sectors, focusing on our shared future.
