Hyundai Motor India bolsters EV infrastructure in Chennai with rapid charging station

In a significant step towards promoting electric vehicle (EV) adoption and enhancing the charging infrastructure in Tamil Nadu, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has inaugurated Chennai’s first 180 kW DC fast public EV charging station. The state-of-the-art facility, located at the Spencer Plaza Mall on Anna Salai, Thousand Lights, comprises 150 kW and 30 kW connectors, catering to the charging needs of all four-wheeler EVs.

This installation marks the first of HMIL’s ambitious target of establishing 100 fast public EV charging stations across key highways and cities in Tamil Nadu, reflecting the company’s commitment to the state where it has been operating for nearly three decades.

Commenting on the significance of this initiative, Mr. Jae Wan Ryu, Executive Director – Corporate Planning at HMIL, expressed the company’s dedication to Tamil Nadu, stating, “As we celebrate 28 years of HMIL in India, we are delighted to inaugurate our first-ever 180 kW fast public charging station in Chennai. In line with Hyundai’s vision of ‘Progress for Humanity,’ we aim to enhance the convenience of all EV users, and hence our charging stations can be utilised by any four-wheeler EV user.”

The newly installed charging station offers a quick and convenient charging experience for EV owners, aligning with HMIL’s efforts to motivate more customers toward EV adoption across the state. EV users can access the charging facility through HMIL’s Charger Management System on the myHyundai App, enabling easy location, navigation, pre-booking of charging slots, digital payments, and remote monitoring of charging status.

In addition to the fast public charging station, HMIL has mapped more than 170 existing charging points across Tamil Nadu in the “EV Charge” section of the myHyundai app, providing customers with a comprehensive overview of available charging options. This app is open and accessible to both Hyundai and non-Hyundai EV users, further enhancing the overall EV ecosystem in the state.

The strategic location of the charging station at the Spencer Plaza Mall offers EV owners the added convenience of accessing customer amenities like coffee shops, restaurants, and shopping avenues while their vehicles are being charged, promoting a seamless charging experience.

HMIL’s initiative to establish a robust network of fast public EV charging stations across Tamil Nadu aligns with the state’s efforts to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles and reduce carbon emissions. By addressing the concerns around range anxiety and charging accessibility, this move is expected to boost consumer confidence in EVs and accelerate the transition towards sustainable mobility.

As the automotive industry continues to embrace electrification, initiatives like HMIL’s fast charging station in Chennai underscore the importance of collaborating with stakeholders to develop a comprehensive EV ecosystem.
