This is the story of Max Rastelli. He runs an electric scooter business called HFX e-Scooters in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Established in 2019, the business represents Max’s commitment to providing cleaner mobility solutions to his city. A longtime Ford F-150 owner, Max’s wish to own an electric vehicle that could support his business and lifestyle came true in 2021 when Ford launched the F-150 Lightning, an all-electric version of the pick-up e was very familiar with. He purchased his F-150 Lightning in October 2022, not realising at the time how the truck would benefit him.
During the initial days of his business, Max had to haul his e-scooters to a central hub in Halifax to charge them, which meant a lot of downtime and quite a bit of driving around. Moreover, the hub could not charge all the e-scooters at once. In 2021, he introduced swappable batteries, which helped him reduce the downtime than before. However, the batteries still had to be transported to the hub daily for recharging.
That is when his F-150 came to the rescue. What started as a way to showcase electric mobility to his neighbours soon turned into a business accelerator for Max. He soon realised that he could charge multiple batteries in his truck while driving! Here’s how. The higher-spec trims of the F-150 Lightning (Lariat & Platinum) come with a 9.6kW Pro Power Onboard feature as standard, thanks to which the pick-up can be used as a mobile power generator. As a result, there are up to 10 120V power outlets in the truck – two in the cabin, four in the rear bed and four in the front trunk, plus an additional 240V outlet in the bed. Thanks to the F-150, Max’s business now runs with a near-zero downtime.
Ford claims Max purchased a second F-150 Lightning in June 2023, owing to the first one’s productivity and efficiency gains.
“Thanks in part to these trucks, I’ve been able to double the number of e-Scooters on my fleet, with near-zero downtime related to charging, making my business twice as efficient,” claimed Max.
