Honda’s upcoming Elevate SUV, sharing a platform with the City, will exclude the hybrid powertrain in favor of a 1.5-liter i-VTEC petrol engine. The choice aligns with Honda’s intention to prioritize an Electric Vehicle (EV) version of the Elevate, set to debut in approximately three years.
Petrol Engine for Elevate, EV in the Pipeline
While the City platform underpins the Elevate, the SUV will solely incorporate the 1.5-liter i-VTEC petrol engine. However, Honda has confirmed plans for an EV version of the Elevate, capitalizing on the growing demand for electric mobility solutions. This EV variant is slated to arrive within the next three years.
Challenges of Hybrid Integration and Cost
The decision to omit the hybrid powertrain in the Elevate is largely influenced by cost constraints. Despite previous efforts to localize the hybrid powertrain to reduce expenses, challenges persist in achieving an economical offering. Competing hybrid models such as the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder hold competitive pricing in the segment.
Taxation Dynamics Impacting Hybrid Feasibility
Taxation plays a pivotal role in the viability of hybrid vehicles. With GST rates at 5% for EVs, 45% for conventional vehicles, and 43% for hybrids, the economics favor EVs. Takuya Tsumura, president and CEO of Honda Cars India, suggested that hybrid taxation should find a middle ground, making hybrids more attractive to consumers.
Elevate’s Strategy and Market Positioning
Honda’s Elevate SUV will solely offer the 1.5-liter petrol engine, available with manual and CVT automatic options. However, this strategy might not cover all customer preferences, as diesel variants remain popular in the segment. Competing strong hybrids are also displaying promising market reception.
Key to Elevate’s Success: Pricing
In a fiercely competitive midsize SUV market, the Elevate’s pricing will be pivotal to its success. Honda aims to unveil the pricing closer to the festive season, aiming to position the Elevate strategically against rivals and cater to consumer expectations.
As Honda navigates the shift towards electrification and optimizes its product lineup, the forthcoming EV variant of the Elevate holds the promise of aligning with the evolving preferences of environmentally conscious consumers.
