Losing the charm
The new Mercedes-AMG GT has not received much praise since the announcement, owing to its shared underpinnings with the SL roadster and 2+2 layout over a dedicated race-bred 2-seater layout. Mercedes-AMG is favouring practicality even for its flagship model. If that was not enough already, Mercedes has gone one step down, by chucking its 2.0L four-banger into the GT 43 coupe. The 2.0L four-banger is a powerhouse, there is no doubt, but it does feel out of place as the flagbearer for AMG’s V8-fueled history.
Nonetheless, it packs some proper German horses. We are talking 421PS of power and 500Nm of torque, which is in line with the AMG A45 S. The tiny four-cylinder engine boasts an electric turbocharger, which is a technology derived from AMG’s Formula 1 race car. The smart turbocharger takes assistance from a 48V battery pack and minimises turbo lag while boosting acceleration.
As a result, the new GT 43 can sprint from 0-100kmph in 4.6 seconds while the top speed is limited to 280kmph. It is not particularly fast when standing against an A45 S all-wheel-drive. The rear-wheel-drive GT 43 isn’t impressive with its outright engine power or acceleration.
However, there is some neat active aerodynamic trickery, which should pay dividends on a fast and flowing race circuit. The horizontal slots placed behind the upper air inlet can be opened or closed electronically. The slats remain closed even at higher speeds to reduce air resistance until the engine runs hot. The slats open up to channel cool air to the engine to reduce the temperature thereby boosting performance.
In addition, the GT 43 also features an active rear spoiler, which opens up at speeds above 80kmph. The intelligent spoiler can choose between 5 different positions to boost either downforce or reduce air resistance. Other elements like unique 5-link front suspension and forged aluminium suspension components reduce unsprung mass, helping in the dynamics. Owners also get the option to spec AMG ride control, AMG dynamic plus and rear axle steering with the new AMG GT 43.
