Ford remains open to the possibility of introducing an electric version of the iconic Fiesta using Volkswagen’s MEB Entry platform, according to Ford’s European head. While not an immediate focus, the partnership with Volkswagen could evolve to enable such a project.
The retirement of the Ford Fiesta after a 47-year legacy marked the arrival of the new electric Ford Explorer SUV, built on Volkswagen’s MEB platform, at Ford’s German Cologne factory. Although Ford has shifted its attention to more lucrative market segments, the idea of an electric Fiesta is still being entertained.
Martin Sander, Ford’s European leader, highlighted the positive partnership with Volkswagen, suggesting it could progress further. Ford has already affirmed its intent to follow the Explorer with another electric SUV based on the larger MEB architecture, signaling the potential for extended collaborations beyond.
While a decision on the use of the smaller MEB Entry platform is pending, Sander clarified that being undecided doesn’t mean a decision has already been made against it. Notably, Sander acknowledged that without Volkswagen’s platform, Ford wouldn’t currently have an electric volume seller in the European market.
The MEB Entry platform, showcased through the Volkswagen ID 2all concept, shares similarities in size and positioning with the retired Fiesta. Ford’s priority, however, lies in developing its own global EV architecture, preparing to deploy it in Europe. Sander expressed confidence in their competitive platform.
Ford is concurrently working on an electric version of the Puma, adapting ICE architecture, which will also serve as the foundation for the electric Tourneo Courier and Transit Courier.
VW’s stance on sharing the MEB Entry architecture is cautious, considering the company’s scale. While not excluding the option of partnering with other manufacturers, Volkswagen aims to initially focus on its own capabilities.
Replacing the Fiesta with an electric variant is not an immediate priority for Ford. Sander emphasized the need for prudent choices aligned with positive business outcomes, reflecting Ford’s strategic approach amidst evolving market dynamics.
