DJI enters e-bike market with innovative Avinox Drive System

DJI, the leader in high-end consumer-grade drones, is making a significant pivot amid potential challenges. With the looming threat of a US ban on DJI camera drones over concerns of data sharing with the Chinese government, the company has unveiled a new product: the DJI Avinox Drive System, marking its entry into the e-bike market.

While the financial impact of a potential drone ban on DJI remains unclear, it would undoubtedly be substantial. However, DJI’s engineers have leveraged their expertise in brushless motors and controllers to develop this new e-bike drive system, which has just launched to positive reception. The DJI Avinox Drive System is impressive in both specifications and features. The drive unit weighs a mere 5.5 lbs and boasts a peak power of 1000 watts, delivering 88.5 lb-ft of torque. Although this isn’t as powerful as McLaren’s e-bikes, it still offers significant performance.

Riders can choose from five modes: Auto, Eco, Trail, Turbo, and Boost. Additional features include Walk Assist, Auto Hold, Hill Start Assist, and Stationary Shifting, providing a versatile riding experience.

The system offers two battery options: a 600Wh battery weighing 6.3 pounds with a range of up to 72.7 miles, and an 800Wh battery weighing slightly more than 8.2 pounds with a range of up to 97.5 miles. Both batteries come with an IP56 protection rating and employ GaN fast-charging technology, enabling them to charge from 0% to 75% in approximately 1.5 hours.

The package includes a 2-inch OLED full-color Control Display, which serves as an interactive and fully customisable hub. Users can engage with it via the Avinox app, which allows for features such as Phone Key for automatic unlocking based on proximity and push notifications for abnormal bike movement. The display boasts a brightness of up to 800 nits and adjusts automatically to lighting conditions.

For those looking for a complete package, the Amflow PL all-terrain bike comes pre-equipped with the DJI Avinox Drive System. Alternatively, existing bike owners can contact DJI for assistance in fitting the system onto their bikes.

DJI’s entry into the e-bike market brings a wealth of technology, power, and range. If the Avinox Drive System performs as well as DJI’s drones, it is likely to attract significant attention from e-mountain bikers worldwide. However, this advanced technology is expected to come with a premium price tag.
