Chinese ride-hailing company, Didi Global has announced a significant milestone in its foray into the autonomous driving arena. The company’s self-driving unit, in collaboration with EV manufacturer GAC Aion, has obtained a business license, marking the inception of the first joint venture (JV) in China geared towards mass-producing fully self-driving electric robotaxis.

Pioneering the future of autonomous mobility

The newly-formed joint venture, named Andi, signifies a pivotal step towards revolutionising the landscape of autonomous mobility in China. By combining the expertise of Didi Autonomous Driving and GAC Aion, Andi aims to spearhead the development and deployment of cutting-edge self-driving technologies.

Introducing the inaugural model

As part of its ambitious roadmap, Andi is set to unveil a crossover electric sports utility vehicle (SUV) as its inaugural model. Scheduled for production in 2025, this innovative vehicle represents a paradigm shift in the automotive industry, offering a glimpse into the future of transportation.

Leadership in autonomous driving

Zhang Xiong, deputy general manager of GAC Aion, underscored the significance of the joint venture in propelling the autonomous driving industry forward. He highlighted Andi’s role as a trailblazer in establishing an early L4 commercial route and pioneering a closed-loop business model for L4 development encompassing technology, smart manufacturing, and operations.

Financial backing and strategic partnerships

The establishment of the Andi joint venture comes on the heels of significant financial backing received by Didi’s self-driving technology arm. With investments totalling approximately $149 million from prominent stakeholders, including GAC Group’s subsidiary GAC Capital Co., Didi Autonomous Driving is poised to accelerate its technological advancements and market penetration.

Redefining the future of mobility

The announcement from Didi Global and GAC Aion comes amidst growing competition in the autonomous driving space. Tesla’s plans to unveil a robotaxi in August, as announced by CEO Elon Musk, signal the intensifying race to develop and commercialise self-driving technologies. With the pivot towards self-driving robotaxis, Tesla aims to leverage its existing small-vehicle platform to usher in a new era of autonomous mobility.

Didi Global’s joint venture with GAC Aion represents a significant milestone in the evolution of autonomous mobility in China. By securing a business license for mass production of electric robotaxis, Andi is poised to redefine the future of transportation, paving the way for widespread adoption of self-driving technologies. As the automotive industry undergoes a paradigm shift towards autonomy, collaborations between leading players like Didi Global and GAC Aion are instrumental in shaping the future of mobility.
