Continental partners DT Swiss, Swiss Side for wheel-tyre system

The collaboration has resulted in a WTS that not only reduces drag but also enhances handling in challenging crosswind conditions.

Continental, in a collaboration with cycling powerhouses DT Swiss and Swiss Side, has unveiled a cutting-edge wheel-tyre system (WTS) tailored for elite cyclists aiming to optimise performance and aerodynamics. At the heart of this partnership is the debut of the AERO 111 tyre, a revolutionary front-wheel-specific innovation poised to redefine standards in aerodynamic efficiency.

Designed as Continental’s pinnacle of aerodynamic performance, the AERO 111 features a patented tread equipped with 48 strategically positioned cavities across its surface. These cavities act as vortex generators, meticulously engineered to manage airflow turbulence upon hitting the front wheel. By enhancing the adherence of airflow to the rim profile, the tyre delays airflow separation, thereby maximising the beneficial “sailing” effect crucial for minimising drag.

The collaborative effort between Continental, DT Swiss, and Swiss Side has resulted in a WTS that not only reduces drag but also enhances handling in challenging crosswind conditions. This synergy between tyre and wheel ensures that speed-focused riders can maintain greater control and efficiency, pushing their performance boundaries further.

Building upon Continental’s Grand Prix 5000 TR lineage, the AERO 111 integrates advanced technologies including the Vectran Breaker for puncture protection, tubeless-ready capabilities, and the race-optimised Black Chili compound. This compound not only minimises rolling resistance for enhanced speed but also delivers exceptional grip across various road conditions, wet or dry. Additionally, Active Comfort Technology incorporated into the tyre absorbs road vibrations, ensuring a smoother and more comfortable ride experience.

Available in widths of 26-622 and 29-622, the AERO 111 is engineered to synergise seamlessly with DT Swiss Aero and Endurance wheelsets, promising to deliver the world’s most aerodynamic WTS. Moreover, it offers competitive advantages when paired with preferred wheelsets from other leading brands, making it a versatile choice for discerning cyclists.

Hannah Ferle, Product Manager at Continental Tyres, expressed enthusiasm about the AERO 111, highlighting its multi-faceted performance capabilities: “With AERO 111, we’ve introduced a high-performance road tyre that excels in aerodynamics, grip, and speed. This collaboration allowed us to innovate beyond existing benchmarks, ensuring cyclists can confidently tackle challenging conditions, including crosswinds.”

Jean-Paul Ballard, CEO and Founder of Swiss Side, emphasised the tyre’s significant aerodynamic advancements: “The development of the Vortex Generator features on the AERO 111 tyres spanned over 4 years. The result is a meticulously optimised design that enhances wheel performance at all speeds, marking a pivotal moment in aerodynamic technology.”

Dr. Matthias Meier, Chief Marketing Sales Officer & VP at DT Swiss, echoed these sentiments, stating, “This tyre represents the culmination of extensive research and collaborative product development. It underscores our shared commitment to pushing the boundaries of aerodynamic excellence and delivering ultimate performance.”

The AERO 111 tyre is now available for cyclists looking to elevate their riding experience with uncompromising speed, control, and aerodynamic superiority, setting a new standard in road cycling technology.
