The new BYD Shark is a mid-sized pick-up truck that is poised to take other trucks like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux head-on. Needless to say, the highlight of the new BYD Shark is its innovative plug-in-hybrid powertrain. Before jumping into its radical design and feature-packed interior, let’s look at its specifications.
Powering the BYD Shark pick-up truck is a 1.5L petrol engine and two electric motors, all of which combined put out up to 435PS of power. While the front axle gets the engine and an electric motor, the rear axle gets its own electric motor capable of belting out 204PS of power and 340Nm of torque. Thanks to motors at each axle, the BYD Shark propels itself from 0-100kmph in 5.7 seconds.
Since the BYD Shark is a plug-in-hybrid pick-up truck, it gets a 30kWh battery pack that enables the truck to drive for up to 100km on sole battery power. Combining the range of both battery and engine power, the Shark pick-up truck can drive for up to 840km. Thanks to fast charging, the Shark can juice up its battery from 20-80% in about 30 minutes, which is pretty impressive for a PHEV. In addition, the Shark also offers Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, thereby enabling it to power small-capacity equipment.
Coming to its design, the BYD Shark pick-up truck features a modern design while retaining the classic two-door truck with a flat bed silhouette. Up front, it features a connected LED light bar upfront adjoining the LED headlights. The large BYD logo, beefy skid plates and muscular wheel arches round off its exterior design.
Heading on the inside, the Shark features a modern interior with a generous use of soft-touch materials. Sitting at the centre of the dashboard is a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that swivels with a press of a button. Other highlights of its interior include a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, a 12-inch head-up display, four spoke steering wheel and amber-finished AC vents.
