BYD, which is currently the biggest EV maker around the globe, is poised to introduce its small electric mini Seagull to the UK as an arch-rival to the Dacia Spring. The Dacia Spring is currently the most affordable electric hatchback in the UK but that could soon change with the arrival of the BYD Seagull.
According to an online report, BYD UK’s marketing boss Mark Blundell said that the company is “keen to have it” in the UK, expanding its range of vehicles. If it is introduced, the Seagull will sit below the BYD Dolphin, which is another electric hatchback from BYD.
In Mark Blundell’s opinion, EVs should be accessible to all sets of customer bases and not be restricted to the upper end of the market. More affordable electric vehicles will attract the attention of the lower end of the market and motivate them to make a switch to electric. In order to boost sales of affordable electric vehicles, the Seagull could do the trick with its unique styling and impressive specifications.
The BYD Seagull is also known as Dolphin Mini in certain markets and its prices start under USD 10,000 in China after a small price cut. The Seagull is underpinned by BYD’s dedicated EV platform and packs blade-type efficient batteries. Thanks to a 38kWh battery pack, the Seagull can travel for over 405km on a single charger. It uses a front-mounted electric motor that belts out 75PS of power and 135Nm of torque.
While the Seagull boasts a small footprint, it manages to offer a 4-door body style with a good amount of space for its passengers. It also packs a long list of features that include a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, 6 airbags and electronic stability control.
