BYD Makes History as First Automaker to Produce 5 Million EVs

Chinese automaker BYD reached a significant milestone on August 10, 2023, becoming the world’s first automaker to manufacture 5 million electric vehicles (EVs). The momentous occasion was marked by the production of a Denza N7, BYD’s five millionth new energy vehicle (NEV), solidifying its leading role in the global electrification movement.

BYD’s journey to this accomplishment has been swift and impactful. Established in 1995 as a battery manufacturer, BYD expanded into the electric vehicle sector, making its mark as a prominent player. Over the years, BYD’s commitment to innovation and quality propelled its growth. The company reached its first million EVs in 13 years, followed by three million in just 18 months. The subsequent achievement of five million EVs took only 9 more months.

Notably, 2022 saw remarkable growth with over 1.86 million new energy vehicles sold.

In 2023, BYD’s momentum continues, with cumulative sales surpassing 1.5 million units from January to July alone. International success has also been a highlight, as overseas sales for the first seven months of 2023 exceeded the total for the entire previous year. BYD’s global new energy vehicle sales now exceed 4.8 million units.

BYD’s global footprint has expanded significantly since 2010 when it ventured into electric public transport solutions. Presently, BYD’s electric vehicles, including the Atto 3 e-SUV launched in India, are sold in over 54 countries, including markets such as Thailand, Israel, and Singapore.

Technological innovation has been the cornerstone of BYD’s success. Pioneering advancements like the Blade Battery, DM-i Super Hybrid System, and e-Platform 3.0 have set industry benchmarks, solidifying BYD’s position as a leader in the electric vehicle market. In 2022, BYD invested over RMB 20 billion in research and development, yielding over 40,000 patent filings globally, with more than 28,000 already approved.

Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD, expressed gratitude to customers, partners, and employees, acknowledging their contributions to this historic achievement. With its continuous focus on innovation and global expansion, BYD remains committed to shaping the future of mobility solutions and driving the transition to sustainable transportation.

The milestone celebration at BYD’s global headquarters highlighted the automaker’s commitment to a greener future and its significant impact on the electric vehicle landscape.
