Bugatti Chiron Super Sport ‘55 1 of 1’: a homage to the Type 55

Bugatti has revealed the Chiron Super Sport ‘55 1 of 1’, a one-off commission for an unnamed customer in the Middle East. Created by Bugatti’s Sur Mesure team, the bespoke Chiron SS takes inspiration from the Type 55 Super Sport roadster (in production from 1932-35), touted as one of Jean Bugatti’s finest creations. Jean was the son of Bubgatti’s founder Ettore Bugatti and the company’s designer and test engineer. Like all Bugatti models, the Type 55 Super Sport is also a rare creation, with only 38 units ever made.

The biggest highlight of the Chiron Super Sport ‘55 1 of 1’ is the same black and yellow dual-tone colour scheme as seen on the Type 55. A black line runs around the signature Bugatti central air intake, and a sleek yellow line flows from the back of the side of the car to the fenders. A meticulously hand-applied fading ‘55’ pattern can be seen above the headlights and over the fenders, to centre attention to the horseshoe grille and narrow the appearance of the front end. According to Jascha Straub, Manager of Sur Mesure and Individualisation at Bugatti, “The ‘55’ pattern ensures that the fender appears to be black like on the original car.” The ‘55 1 of 1’ commission features 10-spoke wheels with a very minimalist design and a yellow ‘EB’ emblem in the centre. Further, ‘55 1 of 1’ written in cursive on the underside of the rear wing is a clear nod to the original Type 55.

The same yellow and black colour scheme continues inside the car. The cabin features embroidered headrests with a unique ‘55 1 of 1’ inscription and the fading ‘55’ motif has been hand-stitched into the door panels in a vibrant yellow colour. In further recognition of Jean Bugatti’s visionary contributions, his signature is prominently placed on the door sill and the car’s dedication plate.

Seen alongside the Chiron Super Sport ‘55 1 of 1’ is the original Bugatti Type 55 chassis no. 55237, loaned to Bugatti by the Musée National de l’Automobile in Mulhouse, France.
