The BMW X4 is back in India, albeit in a different form. This time, the German carmaker has launched the X4 xDrive M40i, priced at ₹96.20 lakh (ex-showroom). This is the first time that the coupé-SUV is available here in the M40i guise. Until now, the X4 was available in its standard, non-M configuration here, but BMW India’s website now only lists the X4 xDrive M40i. However, it should not be confused with the full-fat X4 M – the X4 M40i is essentially the M Sport version that brings along more power, performance, and more dynamic styling.
Powering it is a 3.0-litre inline-six turbo petrol engine with 48-volt mild hybrid assistance. The powertrain develops 355bhp from 5,200-6,500rpm and 500Nm of torque from 1,900-5,000rpm. An eight-speed automatic gearbox is standard, which also offers paddle shifters and auto hold. Being the xDrive variant, the all-wheel-drive system offers additional features like variable torque distribution and hill descent control. While features like cruise control and multiple drive modes (EcoPro, Comfort, Sport, Sport+) are part of the standard configuration, the bespoke ‘M Sport’ kit adds features like Adaptive M Suspension (electronically controlled dampers with individual control for each wheel), M Sport differential & brakes, and Performance Control (variable torque split at the rear wheels with auto differential lock).
Other feature additions are bundled in the ‘M Performance Package’. For the exterior, they include a gloss black kidney grille frame & struts, M High Gloss Shadowline (window framing), M Radio Remote Control, M-Specific ORVMs, red-painted brake callipers and black tailpipe finishers. Inside, the M Performance Package adds M-Specific pedals and seat belts, an M-Specific display in the instrument cluster and an M leather steering wheel.
The cabin has been finished with a bespoke carbon fibre M trim finisher, and buyers have the option to spec the Vernasca leather interior in either Black or Tacora Red. The X4 M40i rides on 20-inch double-spoke-style alloy wheels and features a staggered tyre setup (front and rear tyres having different widths from each other), with 245/45 R20 units at the front and 275/40 R20 units at the rear.
