BMW’s Regensburg plant in Germany has commenced production of the all-new BMW X2, marking a significant step in the company’s push for electric mobility. The facility, known for its flexibility in manufacturing different drivetrain types, has added the BMW X2 and its fully-electric variant, the BMW iX2, to its production lineup. This expansion reflects the brand’s commitment to ramping up electric vehicle production.
A versatile production line for various drivetrains
At the Regensburg plant, BMW showcases its versatile production capabilities, accommodating internal combustion engine models, plug-in hybrids, and fully-electric vehicles, all on a single production line. The facility is currently producing up to 1,000 BMW 1 Series, BMW X1, and BMW X2 models daily, destined for customers around the world.
Plant director’s statement
Armin Ebner, Plant Director at the Regensburg facility, expressed his enthusiasm for the BMW X2 production launch and its electric counterpart, the BMW iX2, emphasizing the plant’s pivotal role in the brand’s electrification strategy. “That we are now building a second fully-electric model here in Upper Palatinate will boost the site’s production volume,” he stated. The announcement reflects the dedication of the Regensburg team, which has worked diligently to integrate the BMW X2 into standard production, from the prototype stage to skills development across the manufacturing team.
Ramping up production with an additional night shift
The Regensburg plant is operating at full capacity, with production volumes increasing. To accommodate the demand, an additional night shift has been introduced, making it a three-shift operation. By the end of the year, BMW will invest over 350 million euros in vehicle production at the Regensburg location, creating permanent positions for approximately 500 new employees at the site.
Pioneering automotive production with BMW iFACTORY
The BMW Group is pioneering the future of automotive production with BMW iFACTORY, an initiative focused on lean, green, and digital manufacturing. The Regensburg plant is the world’s first automotive facility to employ a fully digitalized and automated process for inspecting, processing, and marking painted vehicle surfaces using AI-controlled robots. This innovation marks a significant step towards creating a digital, intelligently connected factory in the automotive industry.
BMW’s commitment to electric mobility is evident with the expansion of its production lineup to include the BMW X2 and BMW iX2. The Regensburg plant’s adaptability and advanced digitalization highlight the company’s push towards an electric future.
