BMW Unveils Groundbreaking Armoured Electric Sedan: i7 Protection with VR9 Ballistic Defense

BMW has unveiled the i7 Protection, a groundbreaking armoured electric sedan, and its traditional combustion-engine counterpart as part of the 7-Series lineup. These vehicles offer unparalleled VR9 ballistic protection, ensuring occupants’ safety in challenging scenarios. The i7 Protection is set to make its public debut at the IAA Mobility show in Munich next month, showcasing cutting-edge security features that include safeguarding against explosive-laden drones.

The i7 Protection is powered by two robust electric motors and meets the demanding criteria for class VR9 protection, mirroring the capabilities of the combustion-engine BMW 7 Series Protection. Both models will be meticulously crafted at the BMW Group Plant Dingolfing using an intricate ‘craft manufacturing’ process. These protection vehicles will be unveiled at the IAA Mobility 2023 international motor show, with customer deliveries for these special defense vehicles starting in December 2023.

The heart of the security concept for both the i7 Protection and 7 Series Protection lies in the innovative BMW Protection Core. This advanced structure is crafted entirely from armor steel, forming a self-supporting protective cell. The protection vehicles are equipped with a host of features, including armor-spec doors, underbody armor, and specialized safety glass. This comprehensive security system provides custom-tailored protection against firearm and explosive threats, making these vehicles suitable for at-risk individuals.

The integration of these security features has allowed BMW to optimize the weight of these protection models compared to their predecessors. This weight reduction translates to enhanced load-carrying capacity, improved handling, and exceptional acceleration and top speed figures. The i7 Protection features an all-electric powertrain with a combined output of up to 400 kW/544 hp and a maximum torque of 745 Newton meters (549 lb-ft).

Both the armoured electric i7 Protection and the combustion-engine 7 Series Protection boast modified chassis technology, ensuring exceptional performance and control even in challenging situations. Equipped with specially developed Michelin tires, these protection vehicles offer enhanced ride comfort, traction, and stability. The vehicles are fitted with a comprehensive selection of driver assistance systems designed to support professional chauffeurs with information and warnings, enhancing security without taking over vehicle control.

BMW’s pioneering i7 Protection marks a significant advancement in the world of armoured vehicles, combining electric power with state-of-the-art security features. These protection sedans provide a seamless blend of luxury, performance, and safety, ensuring the safety of occupants in various attack scenarios.
