BMW Motorrad has unveiled the BMW R20 concept, a roadster motorcycle concept that celebrates the highest craftsmanship and embodies the essence of cool, expressive design. Showcased at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the R20 concept takes centre stage with its legendary air-oil cooled Big Boxer engine, a testament to both classic design and cutting-edge engineering.
“The BMW R20 concept is a mechanical masterpiece, with the Big Boxer in its centre. Distinctly BMW Motorrad,” says Markus Flasch, Head of BMW Motorrad. This concept motorcycle combines a powerful, gentlemanly style with classic BMW attributes. The Big Boxer engine is further complemented by a sculptural tank and a minimalist rear that emphasises clean lines and raw power.
The chassis is completely redesigned, featuring a black double-loop main frame made of chrome-molybdenum steel tubes. The 17-inch wheels, with a wider rear disc wheel and a spoked front wheel, further enhance its retro appeal. The suspension system utilises fully adjustable Öhlins Blackline components, while the brakes boast radially mounted ISR callipers for exceptional stopping power.
Adding to the visual appeal is the exposed driveshaft, a signature element of the R 18 models, shortened to integrate seamlessly into the roadster design. The 2-in-2 exhaust system delivers a throaty sound character, perfectly complementing the overall design.
The heart of the R20 concept is the air-oil-cooled Big Boxer engine, now boasting a 2,000 cc displacement. New cylinder head covers, a belt cover, and an oil cooler were specifically developed for this concept bike, allowing for partially hidden oil pipes. The exposed intake funnels and exhaust system with megaphone-style tailpipes create a truly captivating visual experience.
The boldness of the R20 concept is further accentuated by the aluminium tank, painted in a progressive “hotter than pink” colour reminiscent of the 1970s. This colour scheme is echoed in the cylinder head covers, belt cover, and air intake funnels, all crafted from polished and anodized aluminium. The Paralever strut, footrest system, and ISR brake callipers are finished in gunmetal for a cohesive look.
The single seat, upholstered in a combination of quilted black Alcantara and fine-grain leather, integrates seamlessly with the tail light, accentuating the dynamic roadster character. The modern LED headlight takes the form of a 3D-printed aluminium ring with an integrated daytime running light, giving the impression of the main headlight floating in the centre.
Every detail of the BMW R20 concept contributes to its unique character, a testament to BMW Motorrad’s commitment to both superior engineering and the pure passion for motorcycling. “The R20 concept is a bold interpretation of the BMW Motorrad DNA,” says Alexander Buckan, Head of Design BMW Motorrad. He further added, “It combines modern technical elements with a classic roadster design. Its oversized proportions and minimalistic aesthetic make it an unmistakable character.”
