Enduro is a demanding discipline that pushes riders and equipment to the limit. The Xtep tackles this challenge with a Super Enduro geometry, crafted from a lightweight carbon fibre frame. Weighing a mere 2.2 kg (4.9 lbs), the frame boasts impressive stiffness thanks to a 70% improvement over the previous Xtep generation. BH also claims compatibility with any rear shock on the market, making customization a breeze.

One of the Xtep’s most striking features is its downtube. Its unique, curved design serves two purposes. Firstly, it lowers the standover height for improved manoeuvrability. But more importantly, it cleverly conceals a massive, removable battery pack – a design BH affectionately compares to a soldier’s ammunition clip.

This “banana clip” battery, as it’s been dubbed, boasts a 720 Wh capacity. While BH claims a range of up to 155 km (96 miles) under test conditions, real-world usage will vary depending on factors like terrain and rider effort. Powering the Xtep is a Shimano EP801 motor, churning out a peak torque of 85 Nm (63 lb-ft). While not the most powerful offering on the market, it helps keep the price tag in check.

But the Xtep isn’t all about brute force. BH has equipped it with a variety of riding modes to optimise your experience. “ModeTrail” offers a boost of assistance for conquering tough trails, while “Auto” mode intelligently manages power output and energy consumption for extended rides.

Shimano remains a key player on the Xtep, providing a 12-speed drivetrain, XT derailleur, and powerful MT520 four-piston brakes with 203 mm rotors. Suspension duties are handled by forks with up to 170 mm of travel and rear shocks with up to 160 mm travel. Completing the package are Maxxis Minion tires, ready to tackle any terrain.

The BH Xtep Carbon is a unique and exciting entry into the e-MTB scene. Its innovative frame design, combined with a powerful motor and rider-centric features, makes it a compelling option for enduro enthusiasts. While weight figures remain elusive, the focus on performance and Shimano’s proven components suggest a ride experience worthy of the BH pedigree. However, potential buyers should be prepared for a European adventure, as current availability appears limited to that region.
