BEST accelerates electrification efforts with 10 new electric buses

BEST, with around 3,000 buses, serves as a vital mode of transportation for approximately 30 lakh passengers daily in Mumbai and nearby cities.

Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking achieved a significant milestone in its electrification journey with the recent addition of 10 single-decker electric buses from Olectra Greentech. These buses, part of a larger agreement for 2,100 electric buses, mark a pivotal step in BEST’s commitment to sustainable public transportation.

Strategic Partnership with Olectra Greentech

In a strategic move towards a cleaner and greener transport system, BEST entered into an agreement with Olectra Greentech for the supply of 2,100 single-decker electric buses on a wet lease model. The recent delivery of 10 buses is a testament to the ongoing collaboration that streamlines operations, with Olectra overseeing drivers, fuel, and maintenance aspects.

Expanding the electric fleet

With the latest addition, the count of Olectra’s 12-metre-long electric buses in the BEST fleet has reached 30. This incremental growth is part of BEST’s broader initiative to enhance its electric fleet, which already boasts more than 400 electric buses.

Prior successes and contractual background

Having previously received 40 midi buses from Olectra, BEST’s partnership with the electric bus manufacturing firm has been instrumental. Despite delays caused by legal disputes related to the contractual agreement, BEST remains committed to electrifying its fleet for a sustainable and eco-friendly urban transportation system.

Greening Mumbai’s public transport

BEST, with around 3,000 buses, serves as a vital mode of transportation for approximately 30 lakh passengers daily in Mumbai and nearby cities. The electrification drive aligns with BEST’s vision to play a leading role in reducing the carbon footprint and promoting environmentally conscious public transportation.

Comprehensive electrification strategy

Beyond the recent additions, BEST’s electrification strategy extends to the introduction of double-decker electric buses. The comprehensive approach aims to not only modernize the fleet but also contribute to Mumbai’s environmental sustainability goals.

Commitment to a sustainable future

BEST’s commitment to electric mobility reflects its dedication to providing efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly transportation options for the residents of Mumbai. As the undertaking continues to expand its electric fleet, it reinforces its role as a key player in shaping the future of sustainable urban transport in the region.
